<The Blackness of History – Making Traditional Ink> Participation Information
What color holds the most historical significance?
We believe it is the black of traditional ink.
For a long time, ink has been used as the writing medium to record our history and as a pigment for paintings capturing landscapes.
Now, there are various products that replace ink, and we even live in a world where ink is unnecessary, like with e-books. Nevertheless, the blackness of ink remains a meaningful artifact that recorded precious legacies in our history and continues today through calligraphy and traditional Korean painting.
The Empress Myeongseong Memorial Hall aims to remember and continue the tradition of 'ink' by hosting a special event on the Day of Culture in June with Mr. Han Sang-muk, the only traditional ink artisan in Korea.
Mr. Han Sang-muk is Korea's only traditional ink artisan, participating in projects such as the reproduction of ink for the Joseon royal family, the creation of replicas of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, and the printing of the Tripitaka Koreana at Haeinsa Temple.
During this Day of Culture, you can learn about the history of ink by observing the artisan's work process, make ink in the traditional way, learn the correct way to grind ink, and create beautiful ink paintings on summer fans.
Spend time continuing tradition by making ink, and feel the essence of summer by grinding ink and painting on fans! We hope many of you will join us.
