Empowering Residents as Cultural Ambassadors: The Chilgok Resident Docent Training Academy

The 'Resident Docent Training Academy' is a program designed to empower Chilgok residents to become docents who can share stories about local culture and art, and communicate with visitors. Yang Su-hyun, a representative from the Humanities and Culture City Team of the Chilgok Culture & Tourism Foundation, is working alongside residents through this academy, helping them understand exhibitions and artworks, and develop their ability to convey local culture through their own unique interpretations. We met with him in this October issue of Somun to hear about the meaning and operation of the 'Resident Docent Training Academy' program.

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your current role related to the Culture City project.

Hello, I am Yang Su-hyun from the Humanities and Culture City Team of the Chilgok Culture & Tourism Foundation. I am currently in charge of operating the Resident Docent Training Academy, the Companion Animal Academy, and the Music Video Project We Create.

What was the purpose of planning the Resident Docent Training Academy, and what content does it cover?

The main project I am in charge of is the Resident Docent Training Academy. This project was planned to provide professional training so that local residents can directly participate as docents at cultural event sites. It aims not only to teach interpretation skills but also to enhance understanding of local artistic resources and to lay the foundation for residents to lead local culture themselves.

I believe that the Resident Docent Training Academy embodies the process of residents growing from 'viewers' to 'subjects of culture.' We operate the program with the hope that participants will feel greater affection for the culture of the region they live in and experience the joy of creating together.

As the person in charge, what values or principles do you focus on most when operating the program?

The value I consider most important is 'sustainability.' Rather than ending with a single participation, I hope to create a flow in which the interest and experience gained through education naturally lead to other cultural activities in the region. I believe that it is a true achievement if participants continue to pursue their interest in culture even after the program ends and actively participate in local events or artistic activities. I believe that the role of creating that connection is an important meaning in operating the program.

What do you remember most while planning (operating) the program?

I was impressed by the way participants, who were initially unfamiliar, gradually gained confidence as they explained the works themselves over time. I felt a great sense of accomplishment as I watched people who initially hesitated, wondering, "Can I do it?" explain the works themselves and give and receive feedback, gradually expressing themselves in their own language.

What are your aspirations as the person in charge of operating the Resident Docent Training Academy for the year 2025?

My ambition is not only to operate the program but also to create an experience where participants can feel, "It's fun, I want to hear more," so that this kind of education can be continuously expanded. Through this, I want to see residents naturally connected to local culture and local cultural activities gradually taking root.
