Heyri Art Garden Grand Opening!

With the start of November, Heyri celebrated the grand opening of its Art Garden. Many gathered to congratulate the opening and to show their support for protecting the Earth from the climate crisis. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by the concurrent 'Sunshine Market' flea market.

Gyeonggi Province annually promotes the 'Gyeonggi Citizen-Led Village Garden' project, where community groups transform unused spaces within their villages into gardens, fostering a sense of community. Last year, urban farmers and artists came together in Heyri Art Village with the shared goal of protecting the Earth from the climate crisis. Their proposal was selected, leading to the Art Garden's grand opening.

The opening of the Art Garden was announced with a speech by the representative of the 'Peace Making Gathering,' which encapsulated the garden's significance.

The phrase 'Farmer without Land' on the hat carries a profound message. The indigo-dyed scarf and the colorful decorations on old clothes reflect the sincerity of the Art Garden.

Here, we removed concrete blocks, planted grass, and cultivated hibiscus and herbs on neglected soil. We allowed hardened places to breathe and nurtured life. This garden, with its artist-created rainwater bicycle and solar-powered shelter, is a site of beautiful action connecting people and nature, creating new nature. The Heyri Art Garden, born today, is a garden for all of us, where art, farming, and nature come together.

Heyri Art Garden is a place where the village cultivates, sings, laughs, enjoys, and strengthens community spirit together.

Let's explore the 'carbon neutrality' envisioned in the Art Garden.

What is Carbon Neutrality?

It refers to 'making the total amount of carbon dioxide emissions zero by absorbing or reducing as much as is emitted.' This is the core of addressing global warming and the climate crisis.

1️⃣ Expansion of green spaces leads to carbon absorption and mitigation of the urban heat island effect.

Hibiscus and various herbs have been planted in the garden. As they grow lush over time, their effects will increase.

2️⃣ Renewable energy can improve public awareness.

This is a solar-powered shelter installed in the garden.

Replacing fossil fuels with solar energy can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutrality.

It provides a safe space to rest during heat waves or cold snaps and supports daily life by offering smartphone charging services.

As a 'solar energy experience space,' it effectively serves as an educational site, directly showcasing eco-friendly technologies to students and citizens.

3️⃣ Resource circulation is essential to overcoming the climate crisis.

Let me introduce the rainwater harvesting system installed in the garden.

Rainwater collected from building roofs, rooftops, or rain gutters can be stored and reused for cleaning, landscaping, watering flower beds, washing cars, and flushing toilets. It's a smart system that saves water, promotes carbon neutrality, and prevents urban flooding.

4️⃣ Choosing food from nearby farmers instead of food from afar is the beginning of saving the planet.

The 'Sunshine Market' held next to the Art Garden is a place for this practice.

The Sunshine Market is a local food direct market and community festival-style market that combines culture, art, and experiences, led by art farmers.

By reducing distribution stages, it reduces carbon emissions from transportation and packaging and strengthens the direct connection between local producers and consumers.

The festival atmosphere was heated up with a wonderful performance celebrating the opening of the Art Garden.

Carbon neutrality starts now, starting with me, starting with us!

Climate disasters such as heat waves, droughts, and heavy rains due to the rise in the Earth's average temperature are increasing.

Our small actions now become the foundation for the environment for future generations. Reducing carbon emissions leads to energy savings and economic benefits.

Share carbon neutrality practices with neighbors
