A Unique Journey Through Asia with Dolls

A Special Asian Journey with Dolls
Special Exhibition at Paju International Doll Museum
Sometimes, you don't have to travel far to encounter a new world, right?
The special exhibition I recently visited at the Paju Heyri International Doll Museum, titled "Pop-Up! Asia - Discovering Asia Through Dolls," offered just such an experience!
This exhibition is part of the 2026 K-Museum regional touring exhibition and tour support project "Museum Connection" organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Museum Association, and it runs until August 23 of this year.
As someone who enjoys visiting museums and exhibitions, I was curious about the unique theme of "Asia Through Dolls," which led me to the International Doll Museum in Paju Heyri.
The museum's operating hours are Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The entrance fee is 5,000 won, but the "Pop-Up! Asia" exhibition is free to view.
Upon arriving at the museum, I was immediately drawn to the special exhibition signs at the entrance.
Initially, I thought the exhibition would simply showcase traditional dolls from various countries, but I soon discovered it contained much deeper and richer content than I expected.
The "Pop-Up! Asia - Discovering Asia Through Dolls" exhibition goes beyond merely displaying dolls. It allows visitors to explore the diverse cultures, histories, religions, and natural environments of Asia through the medium of dolls.
When we think of Asia, we often only recall a few familiar countries, but this exhibition reveals a much broader and diverse representation of Asia.
Upon entering the exhibition hall, I was captivated by the traditional dolls that vividly represented the unique characteristics of each region.
The intricate details of the costumes, accessories, and expressions, as well as the cultural traits of each country and ethnicity, were impressive.
Rather than just admiring "pretty dolls," I found myself understanding the significance of each doll's origin, which made me feel like I was traveling through the culture of that country.
I was particularly struck by the dolls representing various ethnic minorities. It was a rare opportunity to encounter the clothing, lifestyles, and religious symbols of cultures that are not easily accessible in everyday life.
Each small doll encapsulated the history and life of a people, conveying not just beauty but also the unique values and stories of each culture.
The highlight of the exhibition was the informative guided program. Listening to the friendly guide while exploring the exhibition significantly enhanced my experience.
The guide provided insights not just about which country each doll was from, but also explained why certain costumes were worn, the natural environments in which the people lived, and how religions and traditions influenced doll-making.
This helped me gain a deeper understanding of various cultures and customs in an engaging way.
Even small details like decorations and colors, which I might have overlooked, were filled with meaning, transforming my perspective on the dolls.
In a short time spent at the exhibition, I felt as if I had traveled through multiple countries!
This exhibition reminded me that culture is not just found in grand monuments or history books.
Even a small doll can encapsulate a nation's history, culture, and the values of its people, allowing us to view Asia in a new light.
This exhibition is enjoyable for everyone, from children to adults. It serves as an educational opportunity for children to learn about cultures from around the world and offers adults a unique experience to see familiar aspects of Asia from a fresh perspective.
If you enjoy visiting museums or want to have a meaningful cultural experience with children, or if you're a resident of Paju looking for a unique exhibition, I highly recommend visiting the "Pop-Up! Asia" exhibition at the Paju Heyri International Doll Museum this summer.
Through the small window of dolls, you will discover a much broader, deeper, and more fascinating world of Asia!
